The Camel is known for it’s prevalent symbolic themes of journeying. The essence of long-distance travel is at the symbolic heart of the camel, and it’s easy to see why. It’s no secret the camel can endure days in scorching hot deserts while transporting precious cargo (even whole nomadic communities!). However in Rajasthan the Camel symbolizes ‘Love’.
The woodblock technique, which I have used to create this piece, is prevalent in Rajasthan. I was not inspired to create pieces using this technique until my travels to Shanghai, where I spent some time, on my way home from India.
In Rajasthan, India you will always see houses and temples adorned with the Camel which represents ‘Love’, you will also always find the Camel alongside the Horse which represent ‘Power’ and the Elephant which represents ‘Good Luck’.
